Nowhere else on earth is there a city with a population as diverse as
that of New York. As a consequence, the students in the New York City
Public Schools come from every corner of the world, speaking more than
one hundred different languages and representing a wealth of cultural
experiences that make our schools a rich and exciting place to work and
study. How fortunate we are to have available to us an array of arts and
cultural resources that can inform the educational process and can make
learning more meaningful.
This guide has been created to help teachers and parents provide avenues
of exploration and enlightenment for our students. Every one of the organizations
and institutions listed in this book has developed school programs that
offer multiple pathways to learning. These opportunities in the performing
and visual arts, as well as the environmental and historical settings
that are represented, all contribute to a deeper and more challenging
education for our students. Arts and culture are not just for the privileged
few, but are here for all 1.1 million students. We are pleased to offer
them to you in this easy-to-read, easy-to-use format. Happy exploring!

I am happy to welcome you to the third edition of the Arts and Cultural
Education Services Guide. For many years, the cultural community has been
providing high quality arts education experiences-from performances to
intensive, hands-on, arts workshops-to the students and families of our
wonderful city. This guide will allow you, as a teacher, a parent or an
arts administrator to have easy access to information regarding such services.
The arts organizations that have education missions care deeply about
bringing the arts to children or, moreover, about bringing children to
the arts. Either way, the impact on both the child and the arts is dynamic,
positive and profound.
I encourage you to make use of this guide and to pass along the information
to colleagues and friends. As New York City has, perhaps, the greatest
collection of cultural resources in the world-music halls, theater spaces,
dance venues, museums, galleries, zoos and gardens, as well as many public
art installations-it is important that you, as a New Yorker, claim these
resources and make this city truly yours.
Best wishes for a fulfilling and creative year.
Schuyler G. Chapin
Commissioner

Introduction
to the Online Guide
|
|
|
This guide offers information on over three hundred cultural institutions
and cultural organizations throughout New York City listed in alphabetical
order. All of these organizations offer varied schools programs. General
information phone numbers as well as school contact phone numbers have
been included, as well as contact names and fax numbers when available.
You will also find the organizations website address listed. Each entry
contains a brief description of the organization. Please contact the organization
directly to obtain details on arts education programs both at the facility
and in schools. Many institutions have prepared pre- or post- visit study
materials in conjunction with their offerings; ask if these are available
when you book your program. We suggest you visit the exhibition or program
prior to taking your class to determine its appropriateness; many institutions
are happy to work with you to tailor their programs to your needs. We
have included Board of Education contract and vendor numbers for those
organizations holding a contract at the time of publication. Please call
the individual organizations for updated contract information as organizations
sometimes hold multiple contracts with the Board of Education. There are
many organizations that are listed that do not currently hold a contract
with the Board of Education. In most cases their programs are free or
have a minimal charge. While this does not by any means represent the
totality of arts education offerings in our city's cultural organizations,
the goal is to provide you with access to the wealth of cultural programming
for children throughout the city to assist you in what you do best-educating
our children.

Candace Smith, Senior,
Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts
I am currently taking and enjoying illustration classes which include
Advanced Illustration and Children's Book Illustration, along with my
academic classes. I will be graduating in June 2000 and plan to attend
an institution of higher learning and major in advertising. This work
grew out of an exercise in the use of colored pencils. For practice, we
were to create a couple of small, simple illustrations using the techniques
we had been taught. Then we were to create a larger illustration combining
those same techniques. I chose to continue with the small boxes and it
developed into my final piece.
