On July 18, 2010, Crain's New York Business published a list of the largest cultural groups in New York City, which is believed to be the first such snapshot of the city's cultural sector. The list, compiled by the Alliance for the Arts, ranks organizations by the size of their 2008 operating expenses. Data for this compilation was derived from 990 forms, which all nonprofits file with the Internal Revenue Service annually, and cultural institutions were asked to provide their most recent attendance and employment numbers.
