EVENTS MARKING THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11

In remembrance of the fifth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Pataki will be present Monday morning at the official reading of the names of the victims at Ground Zero. The Orchestra of St. Luke's, at the request of the Mayor, will play during the solemn reading of the names. There will be a service at St. Paul's Chapel following. These events will be simultaneously nationally telecast and broadcast over the radio. Additional program notes can be found here.

Below is a sample of cultural activities that will take place throughout the city in remembrance of September 11:

  • Beginning on Monday evening, until the following dawn, the skies of Lower Manhattan will be lighted with the fifth annual Tribute in Light at Ground Zero. Originally created by a group of artists working with the Municipal Arts Society and Creative Time, this year's tribute will be presented by MAS with the help of the Office of the Mayor and the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.   • The Brooklyn Arts Council is presenting the photo exhibition Here Was New York: Twin Towers in Memorial Images until September 30. More information can be found at www.brooklynartscouncil.org.
  • The Museum of the City of New York is presenting September 11, 2001: The Bellevue Hospital Wall of Prayer, a display of 47 panels of the wall used after the attacks to post the missing. A public ceremony will take place on September 10 at 1pm, and the show runs through September. More information can be found at www.mcny.org.
  • Musicians for Harmony will host a concert at Merkin Concert Hall, 129 West 67th Street, at 7:30pm Monday. More information can be found at www.musicians4harmony.org.
  • The Juilliard School and Carnegie Hall will host a community sing of Mozart's Requiem, K. 626 led by The Juilliard Orchestra and Choral Union at 12:30pm Monday. Free tickets are required. For more information visit www.juilliard.edu or www.carnegiehall.org.
  • The New York City Fire Museum will host a commemoration of the attacks and a wreath laying tribute at 4pm Monday. More information can be found at www.nycfiremuseum.org.
  • The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy will host a memorial dance performance in collaboration with Silver Brown Dance Company at the Cove in Brooklyn Bridge Park at 7 pm Monday. For more information visit www.bbpc.net.
  • The New School is hosting a free symposium of remembrance in Tishman Auditorium, 66 West 12th Street Monday. More information can be found at www.newschool.edu.
  • The Staten Island Botanical Garden hosts a time of reflection and meditation in its Tribute Center, a memorial to September 11, from 10am-4pm Monday. More information can be found at www.sibg.org.
  • The Little Opera Theatre of NY, through the September Concert Foundation is hosting a concert in Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens at 6pm Monday. More information can be found at www.septemberconcert.org.
  • The New-York Historical Society is exhibiting Elegy in the Dust: September 11th and the Chelsea Jeans Memorial. More information can be found at nyhistory.org.
  • The New York City Police Museum continues to show its permanent September 11 exhibit, 9.11 Remembered. For more information click here.
  • Manhattan Borough President Stringer and City Councilmember Alan Gerson will host Manhattan Remembers, a sunrise tribute and ecumenical service in Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park in Battery Park at 6am Monday. Click here for more information.
