In a banner year for Broadway theater, ambitious, intelligent new works are improbable stand outs. For example, a 2011 Tony-nominated play at nonprofit heavyweight Manhattan Theatre Club (Good People, starring Frances McDormand) held its own with British imports and tourist-friendly productions.
