ALLIANCE TO PREVIEW ONLINE OLYMPIC ART GALLERY

As the world watches the games of the 28th Olympiad in Athens, many in New York are actively promoting the city's bid to host the 2012 summer games. To support these efforts, the Alliance is building an online gallery of Olympic and sports art held in New York city public collections. The Alliance will launch a preview on August 17 to coincide with the Athens games.

NEA ESTABLISHES ARTS JOURNALISM INSTITUTES

The National Endowment for the Arts has established three Arts Journalism Institutes that herald a nationwide effort to improve arts criticism in classical music, opera, theater and dance. The institutes are designed for arts journalists at media outlets located outside the country's largest media markets. The institute for dance critics is hosted by the American Dance Festival at Duke University. The institute for theater critics is hosted by the University of Southern California. The institute for classical music and opera critics at Columbia University will be managed by the National Arts Journalism Program. At Columbia, the institute will take place October 18 to 28. The deadline for applications is August 13.

AMERICAN NUMISMATIC SOCIETY RE-OPENS DOWNTOWN

On June 18, the American Numismatic Society officially opened its new headquarters at 140 William Street in Lower Manhattan. Phase One of the move is complete. It includes offices, the library and a 2,000-square-foot vault. The entrance to these facilities is on Fulton Street. There are educational and research facilities now available to international scholars, students and the general public. Phase Two of the development including the opening of the exhibition hall is planned for completion in 2008.

AT THE ALLIANCE

Johanna Arendt recently joined the Alliance for the Arts as the new Research Associate. She comes to us from the New York City Parks Department where she worked as an analyst in the Operations and Management Planning division. Johanna has lived in New York City since she graduated from Amherst College in 2001.

PEOPLE

Randal Fippinger is the new executive director of the José Limon Dance Company, effective immediately. Mr. Fippinger was formerly general manager.

Clive Gillinson has been appointed executive director of Carnegie Hall, effective July 5, 2005. He was formerly managing director of the London Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Gillinson succeeds Robert J. Harth who ran the Hall from 2001 until his death at the age of 47 on January 30, 2004.

Frances Huber is the new president and chief executive officer of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, effective immediately. She was formerly president and chief executive officer of the Staten Island Botanical Garden.

Meg Ventrudo is the new executive director of the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art. Ms. Ventrudo was formerly assistant director for exhibits and education at the Museum of American Financial History.

Mark Wigley is the new dean of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, effective immediately. Mr. Wigley was formerly interim dean for the Graduate School.

IMAGINE FESTIVAL OF ARTS, ISSUES & IDEAS AUG 28-SEPT 2

The first annual Imagine Festival of Arts, Issues & Ideas will be August 28 to September 2 in New York City. The Imagine Festival is hosting more than 125 events that mix artistic and educational activities through a series of concerts, performances, screenings, forums and town meetings.


NYSCA GRANT APPLICATION DEADLINE SEPT 1

The next application deadline for New York State Council on the Arts registered grant requests is September 1. Check the NYSCA portfolio home page to see the application deadline(s) for FY 2004-05 grant requests.

NPOWER VIRUS VACCINATION DAY SEPT 18

On Saturday, September 18, NPowerNY will hold Virus Vaccination Day. Virus Vaccination Day is a community service event wherein local nonprofit organizations can use the services of corporate volunteers to help protect their computers from virus attacks. Specially trained volunteers will install free anti-virus software and train staff on its use. The registration deadline for this program is August 13.
