SURVEY OF BID/LDC CULTURAL ACTIVITY

On December 3, the Alliance presented the findings from its most recent study, the Arts and Business Survey: A Survey of Business Improvement Districts, Local Development Corporations and Their Relationships with the New York City Cultural Community, at the New York City Neighborhood Development Summit 2003 held at PS 1 Contemporary Art Center. More than 400 members of the City's business and cultural communities attended this year's Summit, entitled "The Arts and Economic Development."

Conducted in conjunction with the Department of Small Business Services, the Arts and Business Survey is the first study of its kind and examines the relationships between Business Improvement Districts, Local Development Corporations and the New York City cultural community. Among the many findings, the survey reveals that 52 percent of local business associations surveyed partner with artists or arts organizations, and of the BIDs and LDCs that do not currently collaborate, most expressed interest in doing so in the future. The complete report is available on the Alliance's Web site www.allianceforarts.org.

ESTATE PROJECT LAUNCHES ONLINE MUSIC AND DANCE ARCHIVES

On December 1, World AIDS Day/Day With(out) art, the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS and the New York Public Library unveiled the Music Archives and the Dance Archives, two new components of the National Registry of Artists with AIDS. In a press conference held at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, it was announced that the archives of more than 130 composers and 150 choreographers who are currently living with HIV/AIDS or who have died from the disease will become part of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts collection. A selection of these artists' profiles, including biographical and career information, is now available at www.artistswithaids.org; the remaining profiles will be available online by January.

The Alliance initiated the Estate Project in 1991 to respond to the unprecedented impact of AIDS on American artists. The National Registry for Artists with AIDS includes information on nearly 1,500 artists in all disciplines, including the new listings of composers and choreographers.
