JUILLIARD, CARNEGIE HALL FELLOWS TO SERVE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Juilliard School and Carnegie Hall will launch a postgraduate music academy for outstanding musicians this coming January. These fellows will spend part of each week in the New York City public schools, in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, and will help music teachers plan and manage their classes. The first 16 fellows will hone their skills as musicians and take classes on teaching music in a two-year program designed to "bridge the gap between the musicians' academic and professional lives." The program will eventually grow to include 50 fellows each year.

DESIGN BEGINS FOR CITYWIDE CULTURAL DATABASE

The long-planned Citywide Cultural Database began design and construction on November 20. The City selected the Web design firm Funny Garbage for the $1.5 million project, which will be the most ambitious Web-based arts and cultural database of its kind in the country. The system will power new Web sites detailing cultural events in all five boroughs, with organizations large and small, and will be aimed at the general public--including parents, kids, teachers and cultural tourists. The Alliance's information sites, www.nyc-arts.org and www.nyckidsarts.org, will be rebuilt and redesigned. Additionally, the system will also collect quantitative data for the Alliance's ongoing research on the economic impact of the arts. The database is scheduled to be launched in the fall of 2007.
