NEWS AT THE ALLIANCE

SURVEY OF PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES ON NATIONAL ARTS POLICY

The Alliance for the Arts, in partnership with the Americans for the Arts Action Fund, is inviting all presidential candidates running in the New York primary on Feb 5, 2008 primary election to participate in the 2008 Candidates' Survey on National Arts Policy. The responses will be published online by the Alliance as well as Americans for the Arts prior to the February 5 primary. The Alliance for the Arts is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization. It does not endorse any candidate for office.


THE ARTS FORUM AT THE NEW YORK TIMES WITH NEW NYSCA CHAIR MARY SCHMIDT CAMPBELL

The Alliance for the Arts will launch its lecture series, The Arts Forum at the New York Times on January 23, 2008. Mary Schmidt Campbell, the newly-appointed Chair of the New York State Council on the Arts, will speak. Playwright Tony Kushner will introduce Dr. Campbell, who is also Dean of Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and was earlier the executive director of the Studio Museum in Harlem. The Arts Forum at The New York Times provides an opportunity for a cross-section of New York's leaders and funders of the arts to meet individuals who are engaged in important new cultural ventures here and abroad. This event is by invitation only.


THE ALLIANCE PARTNERS WITH PODER MAGAZINE

Beginning in 2008, the magazine PODER will publish monthly highlights from NYC-ARTS.org both in its Spanish-language editions in Colombia and Mexico and in its English editions in the U.S., attracting international cultural tourists to all parts of the city. NYC CULTURAL INNOVATION FUND AWARDS ANNOUNCED

The Rockefeller Foundation has announced the first selection of awards from its New York City Cultural Innovation Fund. Individual grants ranging from $50,000 to $250,000 will be given over a two-year period to 16 groups.

The recipients are: the Architectural League of New York; Bang on a Can, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company (Foundation for Dance Promotion); the Bronx Museum of the Arts; Brooklyn Academy of Music with the Asia Society; Carnegie Hall; the Civilians; Cunningham Dance Foundation; the Field (Performance Zone); Friends of the High Line with Creative Time and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation; Harlem Stage (Aaron Davis Hall); Museum of Chinese in America; Museum of the Moving Image; New York City Center; Rhizome (Rhizome Communications) at the New Museum; and World Science Festival (Science Festival Foundation). NATIONAL SURVEY OF BUSINESS SUPPORT TO THE ARTS PUBLISHED

The Business Committee for the Arts has published the latest installment of its triennial survey, The BCA Report: National Survey of Business Support to the Arts 2007. The report indicates that corporate giving to the arts in 2006 totaled $3.2 billion, a five percent decline compared to 2003 figures. For more information, visit www.bcainc.org.

NEW ANTIQUITIES MUSEUM DEDICATED AT FORDHAM

The new Fordham Museum of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Art features more than 260 objects dating from the 10th century B.C. through the third century A.D. The collection, the largest of its kind held by a university in the New York area, was donated by Fordham alumnus William D. Walsh and Jane Walsh. For more information, visit www.fordham.edu.

FRANCE EXPERIMENTS WITH FREE MUSEUM ADMISSION

Eighteen national museums in France will offer free admission in an effort to encourage attendance by French citizens, especially young people. Until June 30, many of these museums, including the Louvre, will offer free admission to their permanent collections while others will admit visitors under 26 years old one night a week. Museum attendance in Britain has risen 50 percent since free admission was introduced there in 2001.

Ellen Kodadek has been named executive and artistic director of Flushing Town Hall/Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts. Previously she was chief executive officer of Southern Tier Celebrates in Binghamton, N.Y.

The Department of Cultural Affairs is accepting applications for its Cultural Development Fund in fiscal year 2009, beginning July 1, 2008.
