ALLIANCE PUBLISHES NEW REPORT ON THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE ARTS

The Alliance for the Arts has published its landmark economic report, The Arts as an Industry: Their Economic Impact to New York City and New York State. The study finds that the arts generate 160,000 jobs in New York City and have an impact of $21.2 billion. Despite the recession of 2001 and the effects of September 11, the industry grew 86 percent since the first study that was conducted with the Port Authority in 1983. The report also assesses the impact of the arts industry throughout New York State.

THE FUND FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS LAUNCH PUBLIC AWARENESS INITIATIVE

On June 7, the Keep It Going NYC initiative kicked off to raise awareness about public education and encourage community involvement in schools. Parents are urged to continue the learning process outside the classroom with cultural activities such as the ones listed on NYCkidsARTS.org. The initiative will be publicized through broadcast and cable television, outdoor ads, Internet banners and a full-page ad in The New York Times, Daily News, New York Post and El Diario.

DANCE/NYC STUDY RESULTS

A report released on May 25 by DANCE/NYC reveals that New York City is the most active dance center in America, drawing an estimated 2.5 million people to local performances and tours in 2006. A Census of New York Dancemakers surveyed 449 dance companies in New York City, collectives and independent choreographers to gather qualitative and quantitative data on the strengths and weaknesses of the dance community.

On May 31, the third annual Alliance for the Arts prize was presented to Joan Tisch, Laurie Tisch and Jonathan Tisch at a dinner for 320 people at Tavern on the Green. The event raised more than $700,000.

29TH ANNUAL MUSEUM MILE FESTIVAL

On June 12, from 6 to 9 pm, Fifth Avenue will be a pedestrian zone from 82nd to 105th Streets for the 29th annual Museum Mile Festival. Visitors will find free street arts activities and nine cultural institutions open free of charge: Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum; the Goethe-Institut New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; the Jewish Museum; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; El Museo del Barrio; the Museum of the City of New York; National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts; and the Neue Galerie New York.

CITY PARKS FOUNDATION SUMMER LINEUP

The City Parks Foundation has announced the largest performing arts event schedule in its 18-year history. The foundation will present over 1,000 events in all five boroughs, becoming one of the leading presenting performing arts organizations in New York. Programming includes an array of concerts, dance, theatrical productions and arts festivals for kids.
