Largest Dance Space in Lower Manhattan Faces Eviction

Dance New Amsterdam Faces Possible Eviction
The New York Times - July 7, 2010

Dance New Amsterdam, the large dance space in Lower Manhattan, faces possible eviction on July 14 from its city-owned home at 280 Broadway because the organization owes more than half a million dollars in rent, Catherine Peila, the executive director, said Wednesday. "With the high rent and the recession, we didn't earn enough money to pay the rent," Ms. Peila said in an interview. "The arts community should really be revved up: we serve 8,000 students, we employ 250 people a year and we moved to Lower Manhattan to revitalize the area." In a statement released Wednesday, the organization, founded in 1984, said it wanted to maintain its mission of teaching dance, commissioning choreographers and presenting performances to the public. It is seeking a meeting with Fram Realty, which leases the building to them for $68,945 a month, and with city agencies to work out an agreement for lower rent to match current market rates and for a nonprofit tax abatement, Ms Peila said. A representative of Fram Realty could not be reached for comment. Over the years, Dance New Amsterdam has presented Mark Morris, Urban Bush Women and David Dorfman, among other artists.
