New Yorkers and visitors can now buy same-day discount tickets and relax and enjoy the energy of Times Square thanks to a new $19-mllion structure which combines a new TKTS booth and a 65-foot-long glowing red glass staircase. The structure is a joint project of the Times Square Alliance and the Theatre Development Fund; it was designed by Perkins Eastman after a concept by the Australians John Choi and Tai Ropiha. The TKTS booth offers tickets to Broadway, Off- and Off-Off-Broadway, and music and dance productions throughout the city. For more information click here.

CULTURAL GROUPS PLAN NEW CONSTRUCTION
Despite economic uncertainty, some cultural building projects are moving forward. In recent weeks, the New York Public Library selected Norman Foster and his London firm, Foster & Partners to renovate its historic 1911 building on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street. The renovation is the centerpiece of a $1 billion plan announced in March to transform the entire NYPL system, including branches and research libraries in Staten Island, Manhattan and the Bronx. For more information click here.

The Signature Theater also announced that Frank Gehry will design its new space at the base of a 58-story hotel and residential building on West 42nd Street and Tenth Avenue. The $60 million Signature Center will include two theaters, rehearsal studies, a cafe, a bookstore and offices. For more information click here.

MAYOR BLOOMBERG CONFIRMS BUDGET REDUCTION PLAN
On Wednesday, November 5, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg confirmed his September statements that cuts must be made to the City budget to account for decreased revenues during the economic downturn. Under the plan, the Department of Cultural Affairs budget will be reduced by 2.5 percent in the current fiscal year and by an additional 5 percent in fiscal 2010, beginning July 1, 2009. DCA will inform cultural groups directly of their projected reductions in the coming days. For more information click here.
