NEW CHAIRMAN AT THE ALLIANCE FOR THE ARTS
J.P. Versace, Jr. has been elected Chairman of the Alliance for the Arts Board. He succeeds Ashton Hawkins who has been Chairman since 2005 and who becomes Chairman Emeritus. Mr. Versace is Vice President at the New York office of Bernstein Global Wealth Management and is an accomplished equestrian. He is also active as a board member and volunteer with many business, youth and social service organizations, including the Association for a Better New York, the Association to Benefit Children, the American Council for Cultural Policy, Children for Children, Jazz at Lincoln Center, MOUSE, New York City Department of Education, One Laptop per Child, Pencil, and the Partnership for New York City. In 2003-2004, Mr. Versace was a David Rockefeller Civic Fellow.
DIA INSTALLATIONS IN SOHO
Two signature installations by Walter De Maria commissioned and maintained by Dia Art Foundation are open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 6 pm. HARLEM ARTS ADVOCACY WEEK SCHEDULED
The second annual Harlem Arts Advocacy Week scheduled from Thursday, October 2 to Tuesday, October 7 will focus on sustaining Harlem's cultural organizations and how the arts and business will effect Harlem's future. The five-day event organized by the Harlem Arts Alliance will include free forums, luncheons, performances, gallery exhibitions and a youth symposium on hip-hop at various locations in Harlem.
CITYWIDE ALL DAY ART EDUCATION CONFERENCE

Saturday, October 25 art educators, elementary school teachers,
administrators and museum educators will participate in the 28th annual
ARTWORKS conference. The conference, sponsored by the New York City Art
Teachers Association and the United Federation of Teachers, will
provide professional development in the field of arts education,
promote advocacy and provide a networking opportunity. For more

ENGLAND OFFERS FREE THEATER TICKETS TO YOUNG ADULTS
In
contrast to the United States, Britain continues to expand free
cultural offerings with a new plan to offer free tickets to 18 to
26-year-olds at up to 95 theaters across England. The £2.5 million
program - funded by England's Arts Council - will start in February
2009 with an initial goal of providing a million free tickets by March
2011.
NEW ART CENTER OPENS AT RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE
The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York officially opened the new Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) on Friday, October 3. Designed by Grimshaw Architects, EMPAC is one of the most technologically advanced facilities in the world including four performance spaces, a concert hall and theater, production suites and studios for resident artists.
SPACE AVAILABLE FOR ARTS ORGANIZATIONS IN SOUTH BRONX
The BankNote building, a landmark office and retail complex currently being renovated in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx, has space available for museums, galleries and performing arts organizations. The redevelopment, designed by the architectural firm Beyer Blinder Belle, will be completed in 2009 with support from the New York Loan Fund. Richard Armstrong has been appointed director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation effective November 4, 2008. He was previously director of the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.Andrea Sholler has been named executive director of Dance Theater Workshop effective October 1. She was previously a program officer at the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
