Open Society Foundations Gives $11 Million to NYC Performing Arts Groups

To offset the recession's impact, the Open Society Foundations is granting $11 million to 79 performing arts groups in New York City. The two-year grants range from $65,000 to $250,000. The foundation's announcement on July 21, 2010 cited the Alliance for the Arts' report, The Recession and the Arts II (May 2010). The report found that more than 60 percent of the city's arts organizations have made significant budget cuts since the recession which have resulted in reductions to public programming and jobs in the industry.
