NEW SITE FOR DONATIONS TO CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS

As part of its service to the field, the Alliance for the Arts has initiated a working partnership with NYCharities.org to enable donors to make charitable contributions to cultural organizations online through its Web site (www.nyc-arts.org). This new service to nonprofit arts groups, available this fall, will enhance the Alliance's Online Cultural Gift Directory, which encourages the public to get involved and support New York City's cultural organizations. NYCharities.org is a new nonprofit Web site dedicated to increasing charitable dollars flowing from donors to New York charities. NYCharities.org will formally launch on October 28 at a workshop held in cooperation with Guidestar, the Children for Children Foundation and others. Its objectives include enhancing all New York City nonprofits' ability to promote their missions, educating existing and potential new donors and extending the fundraising reach of all charities, no matter their size.

NYSCA BUDGET HELD STEADY

On August 11, the New York State Senate and Assembly adopted Governor George E. Pataki's proposed $37.4 million budget for the New York State Council on the Arts as a part of the 2004-2005 budget. The total budget passed by the legislature was $101.3 billion, $1.2 billion larger than Governor Pataki's executive budget proposal, and $10 billion larger than last year's budget.

NEW STATE ARTS FUND BILL STILL PENDING

In June, the State Assembly approved a bill (A5384) that would establish an arts fund to receive contributions from taxpayers through their state income tax returns. If the bill is passed, taxpayers would have the option of checking off a box on their returns and contributing any whole dollar amount. (A contribution would not reduce the amount of tax owed.) All revenue collected would be credited to a fund to be distributed by the New York State Council on the Arts. The corresponding Senate bill (S7540) must next be approved by the Senate Rules Committee before being passed by the Senate.

RUBIN MUSEUM OF ART TO OPEN OCTOBER 2

The Rubin Museum of Art will hold its official opening celebration on October 2. The Rubin Museum is a cultural and educational institution dedicated to the art of the Himalayas. Its new building at 150 West 17th Street in Chelsea was converted from a department store by the architecture firm Beyer Blinder Belle. The mission of the museum is to establish, present, preserve and document a permanent collection that reflects the vitality, complexity and historical significance of Himalayan art and to create exhibitions and programs designed to explore connections with other world cultures.

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER TO OPEN FREDERICK P. ROSE HALL ON OCTOBER 18

On October 18, Jazz at Lincoln Center will open its new 100,000-square-foot facility in the Time Warner Center at Broadway and 60th Street. Designed by Rafael Viñoly specifically for jazz performance, education and broadcast, the new space will house the Rose Theater, a 1,100- to 1,231-seat performance hall; the Allen Room, a 600-seat performance space with a dramatic view of Central Park; Dizzy's Coca-Cola, a 140-seat jazz club; and the Irene Diamond Education Center where classes, lessons, films and lectures will be held.

CENTER FOR ARTS EDUCATION GRANT

This year the Center for Arts Education will award its annual Parents as Arts Partners grants, of up to $3,000 each, to as many as 150 New York City public schools to support programs that involve parents and families in arts education activities between January and June 2005. Schools develop Parents as Arts Partners programs in collaboration with cultural organizations and community-based groups.
