THE CANDIDATES ON THE ARTS: IN THEIR OWN WORDS
The Alliance for the Arts has published statements on City cultural policy from candidates in the fall elections covering funding for the arts and the role of culture in public education and economic development. Widespread support for increasing the Cultural Affairs budget is reflected in responses from the candidates for citywide office as well as a spectrum of City Council candidates. The Candidates on the Arts features responses from six candidates for Mayor, four candidates for Public Advocate, one candidate for Comptroller, 12 candidates for Borough President slots and 38 candidates for City Council. FRIENDS OF THE ARTS PARTY

On Tuesday, November 29, the Alliance will host its third annual Friends of the Arts Party to support the Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Fellowship for Public Policy and the Arts. The cocktail party will be held at Christie's New York (20 Rockefeller Plaza, on 49th Street between Fifth Avenue and Avenue of the Americas) from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. NYCkidsARTS IN PRINT
The fall 2005 issue of NYCkidsARTS, the Alliance's cultural guide for teachers and parents, is now available. Copies are distributed to all New York City public schools and through libraries and cultural organizations. With funding from the City, Citigroup and Bloomberg, calendars are being given to every public school teacher in the city. The content is also available online at www.nyckidsarts.org.


PARENTS AS PARTNERS GRANT PROGRAM

The Center for Arts Education is accepting applications for the Parents As Arts Partners grant program. Grants of up to $3,000 to as many as 150 New York City public schools to support programs that involve parents and families in arts education activities between January and June 2006 will be awarded. BILL T. JONES/ARNIE ZANE DANCE COMPANY
The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company has received a $210,000 grant from the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone to build a permanent performance space in Harlem. For more information, visit www.umez.org.


THE CITIES, ART AND RECOVERY SUMMIT

From September 8 to 11 the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council is presenting an international summit focused on the role of arts and culture after catastrophe. There will be four days of roundtable discussions, performances, films and art installations in all media which will consider how the arts have been crucial to such recovery. SANTIAGO CALATRAVA
At a time when many celebrated local and international architects are working in New York, Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava's World Trade Center Transportation Hub has begun construction. At the same time, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced an exhibition of the architect's work called Santiago Calatrava: Sculpture into Architecture, opening on October 18. Thomas W. Galante has been named director of the Queens Library.

Scot D. Medbury has been named president and chief executive of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

OPERA-FOR-ALL FESTIVAL

On September 8, the New York City Opera presents a concert of highlights from its upcoming 2005-2006 season, plus celebrity singers Rufus Wainwright and Michael Ball. All seats $25.
