NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL & MUSEUM AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER

To commemorate the events of September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation has changed its name to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center. On September 10, the foundation will begin touring a September 11 tribute exhibition appearing in 15 cities across the United States, starting in Columbia, South Carolina. Additional tours are planned for another 12 to 15 venues in 2008.


BRONX COUNCIL ON THE ARTS AND URBAN ARTIST INITIATIVE/NEW YORK CITY ANNOUNCE GRANT PROGRAM FOR ARTISTS OF COLOR

The Bronx Council on the Arts, in partnership with the Urban Artist Initiative/New York City, has announced the second application cycle for a cross-discipline grant program for artists of African, Latino, Asian and Native American heritage. Artists will be awarded fellowships of $2,000 for their creative and professional development. The application deadline is Sept 26. SEEDCO FINANCIAL SEEKS BROOKLYN APPLICANTS FOR ARTBUSINESS

Seedco Financial has announced that it will provide matching grants of up to $2,000 to assist established small and mid-sized nonprofit arts organizations in Brooklyn. The projects must have consultant-related costs in the following areas: real estate acquisition or renovation; new marketing initiatives; or other expansion initiatives. The grant cannot be used to fund a project that is already complete, and organizations must provide a minimum one-to-one match.

NEWS AT THE ALLIANCE

ALLIANCE EXTENDS WORK TO NEW YORK STATE

The Alliance for the Arts' recent study Arts as an Industry: Their Economic Impact on New York City and New York State shows how the arts produced an economic impact of $25.7 billion for the state, generated 194,000 jobs and paid $1.2 billion in taxes to the state in 2005. The report also illuminates how cultural activity attracts tourists to many areas of the state. To promote tourism to the region, the Alliance is preparing a Web site for the upcoming 2009 Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial and a cultural guide for the entire Hudson Valley. The Alliance maintains a complete directory of cultural venues online at www.nystatearts.org.


Robert Bangiola has been appointed Director of External Affairs and Administration at the Alliance for the Arts. He was formerly the Deputy Director at Materials for the Arts, Department of Cultural Affairs.

A SELECTION OF MEMORIAL CULTURAL EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS IN TRIBUTE TO SEPTEMBER 11, 2001

WORLD TRADE CENTER SITE MEMORIAL CEREMONY AND REMEMBRANCE

On the morning of Tues, Sept 11, the official New York City observance of the sixth anniversary of the tragedy will take place at Zuccotti Park. This year, responders to the attack will read the names of the victims. The Tribute in Light returns at sundown.

AMERICAN FOLK ART MUSEUM | 9/11 TRIBUTE QUILT

Using quilt blocks from all 50 states as well as Canada, Spain, Australia and Denmark, the quilt measures eight feet high by 30 feet wide, and is constructed of 3,466 blocks in six panels. The Steel Quilters of the United States Steel Corporation made this memorial in response to Sept 11, 2001. From Aug 11 to Sept 11, it will be on view at the Lincoln Square branch of the museum. AMERICAN PLACE THEATRE | EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE

Based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, this adaptation follows a young boy intent on solving the mystery of a key that belonged to his father, who died at the World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001. A discussion follows the ongoing performance. For more information, click here.

BROOKLYN ARTS COUNCIL | SEPTEMBER 11 REMEMBERED IN FILM

This screening includes documentaries and interpretive films and videos related to the events surrounding Sept 11, 2001. The screenings and discussions with the filmmakers will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 pm from Sept 7 to 10. For more information, click here.

LOWER MANHATTAN CULTURAL COUNCIL | YEHUDA DUENYAS: ONE MILLION FORGOTTEN MOMENTS

Yehuda Duenyas gathers 100 artists from Sept 11-16 at 7 and 9 pm for a performance in tribute to New York City. The program features New York artists making odes to their wounded city with a proud tradition of reinvention. The performances are free, and they will be presented in the 18th-century-style jewel box theater, with audiences sitting in the windows and looking out at the performances taking place in the street. Both shows on Sept 11 will feature a moment of silence.

NEW YORK CITY POLICE MUSEUM | 9/11 REMEMBERED

This permanent exhibition chronicles the role the NYPD played in response to Sept 11, 2001, including exclusive on-camera interviews, photographs and numerous Ground Zero artifacts that help keep the memory of fallen heroes alive. For more information, click here.

NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY | ELEGY IN THE DUST: SEPTEMBER 11 AND THE CHELSEA JEANS MEMORIAL

After the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001 left his business in ruins, Chelsea Jeans owner David Cohen preserved the store as it was. Chelsea Jeans soon became known as a place of note in the pilgrimage to Ground Zero. Since the store's closing in 2002, the permanent memorial has been entrusted to the historical society in a glass-encased space where time stands still. For more information, click here.


NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY | HERE IS NEW YORK: REMEMBERING 9/11

Drawing from one of the largest photography archives in the world, this ongoing exhibition uses pictures to retell the story of a day that will live in infamy. Images by hundreds of people ranging from professional photographers to ordinary citizens are on display in honor of the heroes who gave their lives in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on Sept 11, 2001. In addition to photographs, the society also displays artifacts from the tragedy such as the landing gear from one of the planes that hit the Twin Towers. For more information, click here.

SIXTH ANNUAL INFORMATION FORUM AND COMMEMORATIVE LUNCHEON

Held at the Marriott Financial Center hotel, this year's theme is the 9/11 Living Memorial: Commemorating the Lives and Preserving the Stories of Sept 11, 2001. The forum will include workshops, presentations and exhibits. Click here for more information.


ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY | UNITED IN MEMORY 9/11 VICTIMS MEMORIAL QUILT

St. John's University in Staten Island will host a special viewing of the 16,000-square-foot United in Memory 9/11 Victims Memorial Quilt, an international project supported by over 3,000 quiltmakers from 18 countries. It will be on display at the Student Center Gym Sept 8-9 from 11 am to 6 pm, and Sept 10 from 9 am to noon. For more information, click here.

ST. PAUL'S CHAPEL | UNWAVERING SPIRIT: HOPE AND HEALING AT GROUND ZERO

Known as The Little Chapel that Stood because of its survival as well as its importance as a symbol and as a refuge after the destruction of the World Trade Center, St. Paul's Chapel hosts an ongoing exhibit on the events of Sept 11, 2001, including computer stations containing an artifact archive, a video anthology, an interactive timeline and provision for visitors to send messages from the chapel. STORYCORPS

StoryCorps, as part of its national oral history project, is collecting personal testimonies by individuals touched by events of Sept 11, 2001 at their booths located around the city.
