Cultural Diplomacy: Music Ambassadors in Rhythm Road Announced

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), in partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center, has announced the 10 ensembles selected to tour in the 2011-2012 season of The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad. Ten American urban/hip-hop, gospel, bluegrass and jazz groups will travel to more than 40 countries to perform public concerts and conduct master classes and workshops.

Five of the groups are from New York:

Ari Roland Jazz Quartet (Jazz, New York)
Dennis Luxion/Michael Raynor Quartet (Jazz, Illinois)
The Earth String Band (Bluegrass, Massachusetts)
Jed Levy Quartet (Jazz, New York)
Kate McGarry Quartet (Jazz, New York)
Legacy (Urban/Hip-Hop, New Jersey)
The Melvin Williams Group (Gospel, Louisiana)
Mountain Quickstep (Bluegrass, New York)
Oscar Williams Jr. and the Band of Life (Gospel, Missouri)
Paul Beaudry & Pathways (Jazz, New York)

Marjorie A. Ames, division chief, Cultural Programs, US Department of State, is one of the speakers at the Arts Forum (Cultural Diplomacy: Engaging a Changing World) on March 7 at the TimesCenter. The Arts Forum is presented by the Alliance for the Arts.
